2025 Cycling Carbon Credit

2025 Cycling Carbon Credit

Taiwan, as a global leader in bicycle manufacturing, not only stands at the forefront of production scale and technological innovation, but also bears the responsibility of setting a benchmark in the global transition toward net-zero emissions. However, current research and practices related to carbon credit trading and carbon emissions in the bicycle industry have largely focused on the manufacturing side. From product carbon footprint assessments of bicycle manufacturing to emission reduction carbon credits generated from manufacturing processes, there have already been comprehensive studies and practical achievements.

In contrast, research on carbon emission reductions and the formation of carbon credits from the user side remains relatively limited, making it difficult to fully reflect the responsibility of users in carbon reduction efforts. The behavior of bicycle users plays a crucial role in the realization of net-zero emissions and should not be overlooked. It is also essential for establishing a comprehensive carbon credit trading system and enhancing the competitiveness of the bicycle industry in the international carbon market.

However, when developing a carbon credit methodology for bicycle riding, numerous factors must be carefully considered to ensure the accuracy and credibility of emission reduction results. These include meeting compliance and verification requirements, ensuring data reliability and consistency, and promoting credibility and market recognition, among others.

In other words, carbon credits generated from bicycle riding must clearly establish a Baseline Scenario in order to identify the emission sources being replaced. Only after this baseline is defined can emission reduction data from bicycle riding be compared and evaluated alongside elements required for carbon credit formation, such as Product Category Rules (PCR) and other relevant standards. This process is also necessary to pass the rigorous review requirements of Taiwan’s environmental authorities.

Therefore, researching how to meet these requirements is the most critical strategic task in developing a robust and rigorous methodology. It also serves as a fundamental step in enhancing the global competitiveness of Taiwan’s bicycle industry.
