2025 BAS ESG Forum Unites Global Bicycle Industry for a Low-Carbon Future
On March 27, 2025, the Bicycling Alliance for Sustainability (BAS) successfully hosted the 2025 Bicycling Alliance for Sustainability (BAS) ESG Global Initiative Forum in Conference Room 402 of Taipei Nangang Exhibition Hall 1, bringing together bicycle industry companies and experts from round the world to discuss the strategic role of the bicycle industry in shaping a more sustainable future. This forum not only marked an important milestone for the BAS in its effort to promote ESG, but also served as a leading platform for exploring cycling carbon credits.

Minister Chin-ching Liu of the National Development Council (NDC) and Senior Executive Officer Tseng-ming Hsu of the Industrial Development Administration (IDA), Ministry of Economic Affairs both attended the forum, which officially kicked off at 9:30 AM. Domestic attendees included Chairman Robert Wu of the Taiwan Bicycle Association, Chairman Cheng-chung Pai of the Cycling & Health Tech Industry R&D Center, Chairman Vicky Liu of YouBike Co., Sheron Wang, CEO of the Cycling Lifestyle Foundation, and other important industry representatives in Taiwan.

In addition, representatives from international organizations also participated in the event, including WBIA representative Bayram Akgül, WFSGI representative Michelle Smyth, CONEBI representative Massimo Panzeri, CIE representative Tony Grimaldi, EBMA representative Rémi Virion, LEVA USA representative Dr. Jonathan Weinert, PeopleForBikes representative Ed Benjamin, German ZIV representative Anke Schäffner, and World Bicycle Day initiator Professor Leszek Sibilski also participated in this global initiative forum.

This year's forum focused on the human rights code of conduct for the bicycle industry.Lauren Chao, Partner at PwC, was invited to share the implementation report of the BAS human rights code of conduct and the plans for the second phase of work projects. The forum also showcased BAS’s overall progress in sustainable development during 2024. 87% of BAS members have completed organizational greenhouse gas inventory, 48% of members have conducted product carbon footprint calculations, and some members have begun developing Product Category Rules(PCRs) for bicycles.

Professor Leszek Sibilski, the initiator of World Bicycle Day, was invited to attend the forum and delivered an introduction to the session on BAS’s promotion of cycling carbon credits. He quoted Arthur Rolle, Chairman of the CDM Executive Board: “Bicycles are a great way to get around, and they’re essential for reducing the emissions that cause climate change.” Sibilski noted that this underscores why cycling carbon credits will be a growing area of focus in the years ahead. He expressed hope that Taiwan will continue to lead the way in advancing cycling carbon credits.

Last year’s forum received an enthusiastic response from the bicycle industry. This year, LEVA USA registered specifically to participate in the forum and shared innovative measures taken by American bicycle manufacturers and retailers to promote a more sustainable industrial environment. Examples presented included Trek, QBP, and Feedback Sports.

Glory Wheel Enterprise shared its efforts in recycling and reusing aluminum alloy scrap to reduce carbon emissions associated with bicycle manufacturing materials. Compressing aluminum scrap helps avoid the need for large trucks to transport lightweight cargo, thereby reducing transportation-related carbon emissions and supporting the circular economy.

Token Products Inc. has launched a pioneering initiative in the bicycle industry by implementing a 2.5-day weekend. The company’s workforce has since become more stable, and employees proactively offer innovative suggestions to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs, making the company’s price quotes more competitive.

Kenda Rubber Ind. Co. has not only upgraded its equipment and transitioned to cleaner energy sources, but also incorporated recycled, environmentally friendly materials into its products, such as recycled rubber, recycled carbon black, and soybean oil. The company has implemented ISO 31000 in its corporate governance framework and conducts ongoing risk management. An internal Sustainable Development Committee has been established to promote a range of sustainability initiatives.
